Brickwood Galuteria, well-known in the Islands as a radio host, live emcee and, more recently, the Democratic Party chairman, will be leaving Hawaiian 105 KINE after 26 years on Hawai'i radio.

Galuteria's last day at KINE is Saturday, said David Daniel, program director of Hawaiian 105 KINE, in a written release.

Galuteria declined to be specific about his career plans, but he did say that working with the Democratic Party "has given me a wider view of how to help Hawai'i."

"Windows of opportunities open and close. And for me, it's time to step through the window."

Galuteria, 50, called his stint with the station, part of Cox Radio Hawaii, "an incredible journey." Among the highlights, in his memory: Connecting a phone call that was replayed on-air between the voyaging canoe Hokule'a, space shuttle Columbia, and public school kids in 1992.

The on-air entertainer has long been associated with Hawaiian music, on the radio and in live performance. He started his broadcast career as the overnight jock on AM radio with KCCN before joining the popular "Aloha Morning Show" on KCCN FM. In the 1980s, he moved over to KINE.

Galuteria served as party chair for the Democrats, from 2004 until his term ended in May.
