The city of Honolulu realizes it needs to begin paving its major streets, the July 10, 1900, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported.

1912: Duke Kahanamoku wins the gold medal in the 100-meter dash in swimming at the Stockholm Olympics.

1944: Hawaiian Airlines asks the Civil Aeronautics Board for permission to fly to Tokyo and Manila postwar. The application proposed using island bases already seized from Japan and ones for which the United States had yet to fight.

1945: Most wartime restrictions on fishing in Hawai'i are lifted by the Navy.

1949: The Kona Airport opens.

1961: Halema'uma'u erupts, sending fountains 600 feet into the air.
