Kono finishes fifth in junior golf tourney

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono finished fifth in the girls division and Tadd Fujikawa tied for 16th at the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions yesterday at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen, Colo.

Kono, a Punahou junior, shot a final-round 5-over 75 and finished at 292, six strokes behind medalist Ashleigh Simon of South Africa, who also shot a 75 yesterday.

Fujikawa, Moanalua sophomore, shot 3-over 73 for a 289 total. Philip Francis of Scottsdale, Ariz., won with a 70—278.

The tournament was sponsored by the American Junior Golf Association.

HAWAI'I ATHLETES EXCEL AT JUNIOR OLYMPICS

Hawai'i siblings Melinda and Daniel Chow each received Sportsmanship Awards and Nahoakuwoo Salera won a Best Technique Award at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships, which ended yesterday at San Jose, Calif.

The championships were for ages 6 to 12 on Saturday and 13 to 19 yesterday.

Melinda Chow won the 48-kilogram (106-pound) Intermediate 2 (born in 1994 or 1995) division. She went 5-0 and won each of her matches by ippon (instant win).

Daniel Chow, won the boys International Judo Federation 66-kilogram (146-pounds) division. Sister Chrissy Chow also won her Girls Juvenile A Division (1992-93) at 53 kilograms (116 pounds).

Salera captured the 42-kilogram (93-pound) Intermediate 2 Division, winning each of his five matches by ippon.

Other Hawai'i winners were: Sienna Ho, Kaylin Castro, Teniya Alo, Cameron Kato, Tyler Allen, Ka'ua Nishigaya, Teshya Alo, Jacob Palimo'o, Kekoa Morris, Dane Pestano, and Bryson Castro.

Also Corey-Jo Tashima, Taylor Ibera, Megan Morisada, Tani Ader, Jordan Ng and Anthony Kwon.

Shobukan Judo Club and Hawaii Tenri, both of Honolulu, were the first- and second-place clubs at the two-day event.

California was the winningest state, followed by Hawai'i and Colorado.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

LAMBERT, METZGER WIN ATLANTA TOURNAMENT

Punahou alums Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger won their second pro beach volleyball title of the season, defeating Dax Holdren and Sean Scott, 21-17, 18-21, 15-13, to capture the AVP Atlanta Open.

Scott also is a Punahou graduate.

Lambert and Metzger are the only team to make the final four in all eight Association of Volleyball Professionals tour events this season.

They beat Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings, 21-16, 21-13, to advance to the final. Holdren and Scott reached the final through the losers' bracket, beating Larry Witt and Punahou alum Kevin Wong, 21-17, 21-15 and John Hyden and Jeff Nygaard, 22-20, 21-17.

Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs upset top-seed Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, 21-16, 19-21, 15-12, for their second title of the season.


BASEBALL

MAUI ADVANCES TO BIG LEAGUE REGIONALS

Maui (District 3) defeated Honolulu (District 6), 13-3, to win the Little League Big League (16- to 18-year-olds) State Tournament at Halawa Field yesterday.

Maui advances to the Western Regional, July 20 to 25 at Port Orchard, Wash.
