Vietnam POW announces candidacy for U.S. Senate

Capt. Jerry Coffee, a Vietnam prisoner of war and motivational speaker, today announced his candidacy in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.

At a press conference attended by his wife Susan Page, Gov. Linda Lingle, Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona, several Republican members of the state Legislature, and other supporters, Coffee said he would seek the seat currently held by Sen. Daniel Akaka.

Coffee served in the U.S. Navy for 28 years, with seven of those years spent as a prisoner of war in Hanoi. He is currently an inspirational speaker and columnist for Midweek Magazine.

The primary election will be held Sept. 23.
