Advertiser Staff

Longs Drug Stores Corp. announced today the retirement of Gerald Saito, senior vice president of Longs in Hawaii, effective August 3rd.

Saito began his career with Longs Drugs as a store clerk, and after assuming a series of promotions in his 36 years of service, the Hawaii native was appointed to his current position in 1991.

As senior vice president for Hawaii, Saito oversees the operations of all 31 Longs stores in Hawaii.

"Gerald has been an invaluable member of the Longs team for more than 36 years," said Warren F. Bryant, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "We honor his hard work and service with the company and know that he leaves behind a tremendous legacy."

EPA fines Hoku Scientific for hazardous waste violations

The Environmental Protection Agency said Hoku Scientific Inc. has agreed to to pay a fine of $14,200 as a result of hazardous waste violations at a former facility on O'ahu.

In November 2004 the EPA found the facility did not have a hazardous waste identification number, failed to properly label two 55-gallon drums of solvent in a waste storage area, and had not posted emergency contact information in the area where the solvent was stored.

Hoku corrected the violations at its Kalihi facility before its operations to Kapolei. Hoku shares closed today at $3.15, up 7 cents.
