Lingle vetoes 27 bills

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle vetoed 27 bills this morning, including unemployment insurance, workers' compensation and prevailing wage bills that were important to labor unions.

The governor decided to drop one bill — relating to family visits at prisons — off her intended veto list and will allow it to become law without her signature.

State House and Senate leaders decided yesterday not to return for a veto override session, meaning the bills Lingle vetoed are dead.

House leaders had asked the governor not to veto legislation that would have provided a basic healthcare plan for uninsured children, but Lingle vetoed the bill.

Labor unions had wanted Democratic leaders to return and override Lingle's vetoes to show their political differences with the Republican governor.
