Man killed after trucks collide

A man died yesterday after a pickup truck he was in crashed head-on with a tow truck on Wilikina Drive near Wahiawa.

The collision occurred at 5:09 p.m. and forced the closure of Wilikina Drive between Kauko-nahua Road and Kamananui Drive.

Firefighters pried the injured man out of the pickup truck. He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital in "extremely critical" condition and later died there, said city Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

It was the 53rd traffic fatality on O'ahu in 2006 and the 87th statewide.


GIRL RUN OVER BY STATION WAGON DIES

WAILUKU, Maui — A 2-year-old girl died yesterday after she was run over by a station wagon in the driveway of a Ka'ae Place home in Wailuku.

Police said the 20-year-old driver of a 1994 Ford station wagon was pulling forward in the driveway about 9:20 am. when the car hit Cherish Reinhardt-Chock. The driver was the toddler's aunt. The girl's grandmother was a passenger in the car.

The child was pronounced dead about an hour later at Maui Memorial Medical Center.


FISHERMAN DIES FOLLOWING FALL

A man who was pulled from the water off Kewalo Basin yesterday died at Straub Clinic & Hospital, city Department of Emergency Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.

Police said a witness saw the man fishing near the beach and that a wave knocked him into the water. An off-duty firefighter pulled the man out of the water.

The case was classified as an unattended death, pending an autopsy.


2 MISSING GIRLS FOUND IN FLORIDA

HILO, Hawai'i — Two children missing for more than a month were found yesterday in Florida with their biological mother, Big Island police said.

The mother, 30-year-old Diana Tamura, was arrested by Florida police for custodial interference.

The parents with legal custody of the girls reported they dropped off Chelsea Gouveia, 5, and Celeste Gouveia, 11, with Tamura on the morning of May 27.

Tamura failed to return the girls at a pre-arranged time later that morning.


MAN ARRESTED AS ROBBERY SUSPECT

Police arrested a 20-year-old man as a suspect in a strong-arm robbery in Wahiawa Saturday evening.

A 24-year-old woman told police that a man approached her about 6:30 p.m., punched her, choked her and took her money.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Police reported finding illicit drugs on the man and added arrests on suspicion of promoting dangerous drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.


SEXUAL ASSAULT SUSPECT ARRESTED

An 18-year-old man was arrested Sunday after a 22-year-old woman told police the man held her against her will and sexually assaulted her early Sunday morning.

After the woman identified the man for police as her attacker, he was arrested on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping.
