One lane of H-1 closing for up to weeks

Advertiser Staff

One lane of the H-1 Freeway may be closed for up to two weeks following the discovery of a damaged drainage culvert under the highway, state officials said yesterday.

Crews shut down the right west-bound lane of the freeway near Ka'amilo Overpass in 'Aiea about 10 a.m. yesterday to begin filling a void around the 11-foot drainage pipe next to Olopana Street.

State crews found the void larger than expected and said it may take several weeks to complete the repairs, Transportation Department spokesman Scott Ishikawa said.

Engineers were afraid that continued traffic over the drain pipe area might result in further damage to the highway. Repair work will begin immediately, Ishikawa said.

"We know it will be an inconvenience, but we'd rather get the work done soon rather than run into the back to school traffic in August," he said.
