Hoku Scientific agrees to fine

The Environmental Protection Agency said Hoku Scientific Inc. has agreed to pay a fine of $14,200 as a result of hazardous waste violations at its former facility in Kalihi.
In November 2004, the EPA found Hoku did not have a hazardous waste identification number, failed to properly label two 55-gallon drums of solvent in a waste storage area and had not posted emergency contact information in the area where the solvent was stored.
Hoku, a maker of fuel-cell components, corrected the violations at its Kalihi facility before moving its operations to Kapolei. Hoku shares closed today at $3.15, up 7 cents.
LONGS IN HAWAI'I SENIOR VP RETIRES
Longs Drug Stores Corp. announced the retirement of Gerald Saito, senior vice president of Longs in Hawai'i, after 36 years with the company.
Saito began his career with Longs Drugs as a store clerk, and after a series of promotions the Hawai'i native was appointed to his current position in 1991. His retirement is effective Aug. 3.
As senior vice president for Hawai'i, Saito oversees the operations of all 31 stores in the state.
"Gerald has been an invaluable member of the Longs team for more than 36 years," said Warren F. Bryant, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "We honor his hard work and service with the company and know that he leaves behind a tremendous legacy."
PORTABLE ATMS NOW AVAILABLE
Bank of Hawaii and Sprint Hawai'i will begin offering portable ATMs that can be used at sporting events and other large public gatherings.
Unlike traditional ATMs which require dial-up services or a physical land line, the new ATMs rely on wireless broadband technology that allows the bank to set up the machines anywhere near an electrical outlet and in an area where Sprint offers wireless connectivity.
The bank tested one of its new ATMs at last month's Taste of Honolulu.
