Kilauea is called "Earth's greatest marvel" by Mainlanders who traveled here for the dedication of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. This story is from the July 12, 1921, Honolulu Advertiser.

1892: Alexander Joy Cartwright dies at his seaside residence in Waikiki at the age of 73.

1901: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports that forest fires are sweeping through the Hamakua District. By July 15, it was reported that more than 295 acres of sugar cane were destroyed.

1946: Douglas DC-4 Clippers go into service between Hawai'i and the Mainland following the grounding of all Constellation aircraft by the Civil Aeronautics Board.

1947: Twelve striking pineapple workers are arrested on Kaua'i for obstructing a public road.

1953: A Transocean DC-6 crashes on a flight between Wake and Honolulu, killing 58. It was the first commercial plane to go down in the Pacific since World War II.
