Lightning leading fleet

Lightning, Thomas Akin's Santa Cruz 52 of the San Francisco Yacht Club, traveled 225 miles to maintain the lead in the 14th Biennial West Marine Pacific Cup race from San Francisco to Kane'ohe.

Lightning also leads the big boats of Division E as the fleet reached the halfway point.

Other division leaders are: The Contessa (doublehanded), California Girl (A), Tutto Bene (B), ET (C) and Sapphire (D).

One boat is expected to earn the Million Mile Trophy today when the race will have logged a million miles of sailing. Contenders for the trophy are ET, Lightning, Basic Instinct, Orizaba, Sapphire, Synge and The Contessa. The first finishers are projected to reach Kane'ohe Bay as early as Saturday.
