In 2002-03, the 50 states and the District of Columbia spent an average of $8,044 in expenditures for every pupil in membership. This represented a 4.1 percent increase in expenditures per student from the previous school year.

NEEDED N.Y. TEACHERS OFFERED HOUSING SUPPORT
The New York City Department of Education hopes its new housing-support program will attract at least 100 newly-hired math, science and special-education teachers to some of its high-need middle and high schools. Eligible teachers will get an initial payment of up to $5,000 for housing and a two-year, $400 monthly stipend in exchange for a three-year commitment.
