Hawai'i karate athletes bring home 96 awards

The International Karate Federation of Hawai'i came away with 96 awards at the AAU National Karate Championships at Florida International University in Miami.
The IKF, led by chief instructor Chuzo Kotaka, won 56 gold medals, 27 silver, eight bronze and five grand championships at the competition, which ran from June 28 to July 1.
Elisa Au won three grand champion titles in the women's kata, kumite kito and kumite open. Maile Chinen won a grand championship in the women's kumite kilo and George Kotaka was grand champion in the men's kumite kilo.

GYMNASTICS THREE FROM ISLES WIN AT U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS
Nani Vercruyssen captured three titles in the junior women's division at the U.S. Championships, which ended on Monday in Schaumburg, Ill.
Vercruyssen, a 14-year-old freshman at Roosevelt High, won the junior elite individual trampoline, the junior elite double mini trampoline and the junior elite synchronized trampoline. She also was selected to the first junior position for the U.S. National Trampoline Team that will compete in the Pan American Championships in Monterrey, Mexico, next month.
Matt Moniz, a 19-year-old from 'Aiea, placed third in the senior elite double mini trampoline at Schaumburg. Spencer Dupio, a 15-year-old sophomore at Roosevelt, finished fifth in the junior elite double mini trampoline.
Hawai'i Academy placed second in double mini trampoline and second in the overall category.
AIR RIFLERY PUNAHOU SQUAD WINS TEAM TITLE IN KENTUCKY
Punahou School captured the team title at the Daisy International Air Gun Championship on July 4 and 5 at Bowling Green, Ky.
The team members for the Punahou Gold Air Rifle team in the three-position sporter event were Heather Horn, 17, Jonathan Onaga, 17, Simone Riford, 18, and Rachel Tochiki, 15.
Earning individual honors for excellence in shooting positions were Riford (gold, junior kneeling, bronze, junior prone), Horn (bronze, junior standing, bronze, junior kneeling) and Tochiki (silver, intermediate junior kneeling).
The matches, held at Western Kentucky University, pitted top high school and club rifle teams from across the country in shoulder-to-shoulder competition.
