Coaches association honors UH track team

The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team has been recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as an All-Academic Team for its athletic and academic accomplishments during the indoor and outdoor seasons.

The Rainbow Wahine were one of 75 squads with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Also, junior Patricia Gauthier, sophomore Annett Wichmann and freshman Emily Sheppard were recognized for carrying a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher while meeting the NCAA Division I regional qualifying mark in their events.

Stanford was named All-Academic Team of the Year for the indoor season while South Carolina earned the same award for the outdoor season.


SAILING

CONTESSA DUE IN TODAY

Contessa, a 52 1/2-foot Swede 55 sloop from Alameda, Calif., is expected to be the first yacht to reach Kane'ohe today in the West Marine Pacific Cup from San Francisco. Its estimated time is as early as 11:52 a.m.

Contessa is being sailed doublehanded — with just Shawn Throwe and Neil Weinberg aboard.

Lightning, a Santa Cruz 52 that leads the fleet and Division E based on handicap, is estimated to arrive around 11 p.m. after a 242-mile day.

California Girl leads Division A, while Tutto Bene has an edge on fast-closing Locomotion in Division B.

Basic Instinct put in a 202-mile run to wrest the Division C lead from ET, while Recidivist sailed 201 miles to open a comfortable lead in Division D.


BOXING

VALDEZ GAINS FINAL

Chanelle Valdez, of Waipi'o Gentry, advanced to the final of the 176-pound division when Kindra Brewton, of North Carolina, retired in the third round of the semifinals yesterday at the Women's Golden Gloves National Tournament in Hollywood, Fla.

Valdez is a member of the Evolution Boxing Club.

Mililani's Colleen Loo is also in the final of the 106-pound division.

The finals are scheduled for today.


GOLF

HEW WINS BY ONE

Mia Hew shot a 79 yesterday to edge Mona Kim and Kuulei Kaae and win the 30th annual Pua Melia Invitational women's golf tournament at Olomana Golf Links.

Hew finished at 157, a stroke ahead of Kim (80) and Kaae (78).

Tina Ramos (61) won a playoff with Joan Machado (64) for low-net honors. Both shot 137.


SWIMMING

Sun shines in L.A.

Hongzhe Sun, a 2003 Iolani School graduate now attending Stanford University, won the 200-meter backstroke yesterday at the Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles.

Sun, from 'Ewa Beach, finished in 2 minutes, 0.53 seconds. Benjamin Stasiulis was second in 2:00.70.
