SAN DIEGO — The Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres might need another break to recover from this one.

Adam LaRoche homered twice and drove in five runs, including two on an 11th-inning double, to help the Braves to a wild 15-12 win over the Padres last night in the highest-scoring game in Petco Park's three-year history.

"How many times did it go back and forth?" LaRoche asked after the teams' first game back from the All-Star break. "Golly. That's not what we really had in mind to open up the second half, but it's a win and we'll take it, because God knows we need as many as we can get right now."

Atlanta, which has won 14 straight division titles, moved into second place in the NL East, percentage points ahead of Philadelphia but still 13 games behind the New York Mets.

The NL West-leading Padres had rallied four times to tie the game, including in the ninth, a half-inning after Trevor Hoffman blew a save for just the second time in 26 chances by allowing Andruw Jones' two-run double.

Kaua'i's Tyler Yates pitched the 11th for his first career save.

It looked like LaRoche's leadoff homer in the 10th off Brian Sikorski — his second of the game and 15th this season — would give the Braves a lead that would hold up. But Brian Giles walked leading off the Padres' 10th, took third on pinch-hitter Rob Bowen's single and scored on a double play.

The Braves scored three in the 11th off Clay Hensley (5-7), who's scheduled to start Tuesday against Philadelphia. Andruw Jones scored on Jeff Francoeur's grounder before LaRoche added a two-run double down the left-field line, his fourth hit of the night. The five RBIs tied his career high.

Cardinals 5, Dodgers 0: Chris Carpenter (8-4) threw a two-hitter for his 10th career shutout and 21st complete game, Chris Duncan hit a two-run homer and David Eckstein had four hits to help host St. Louis beat Los Angeles for its fifth straight victory.

METS 6, CUBS 3: Steve Trachsel (9-4) gave up two runs on three hits in six innings to win his seventh straight start, and visiting New York used a four-run fourth inning, spurred by a two-run throwing error by shortstop Ronny Cedeno, to hand Greg Maddux (7-10) his fifth straight loss.

Marlins 3, Astros 1: Rookie Anibal Sanchez (2-0) allowed two hits over seven shutout innings and Reggie Abercrombie hit a two-run homer to lead host Florida over Houston and Roger Clemens (1-3). Clemens lasted five innings, giving up two runs and seven hits in his fifth start of the season.

Reds 3, Rockies 1: Adam Dunn hit his 29th homer of the season, a solo shot in the first, and Aaron Harang (10-6) allowed three hits in seven shutout innings to beat visiting Colorado and become Cincinnati's first 10-game winner of the season.

Pirates 7, Nationals 4: Jason Bay drove in two runs, Jose Bautista homered among his three hits and Zach Duke (6-8) won for the first time in a month, giving up three runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings to help host Pittsburgh beat Washington.

Diamondbacks 4, Brewers 3: Luis Gonzalez doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth against closer Derrick Turnbow (4-5) and Johnny Estrada drilled Turnbow's next delivery 392 feet into the seats in right field for his seventh homer of the season as Arizona beat Milwaukee.

Giants 5, Phillies 3: Barry Bonds walked twice, scoring both times, stole a base and made a sliding catch in left field, Ray Durham homered for the fifth time in 11 games, and Matt Morris (8-7) allowed three runs and six hits over six innings to lead host San Francisco past Philadelphia.
