"Movin' Out," the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical magnifying hits by Billy Joel and conceived, directed and choreographed by Twyla Tharp, moves into the Blaisdell Concert Hall for a 13-performance run over 10 days beginning Sept. 8.

The innovative musical depicts post-World War II idealism, the uncertainty of the Vietnam war and the era that followed in a narrative told through lyrics and dance. It's ground Tharp has covered before — she choreographed the dance numbers in the film version of "Hair."

The company includes an original principal dancer, Keith Roberts, who created the role of Tony, earning a 2003 Tony Award nomination. Roberts is a former principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre.

Other Broadway cast members appearing in Honolulu include David Gomez, alternating as Tony; Stuart Capp as James; Dylis Croman and Holly Cruikshank alternating as Brenda; Cody Green as Eddie; and Laura Feig as Judy. They have danced with such companies as the New York City Ballet, Twyla Tharp Dance and Feld Ballet.

Darren Holden and Matthew Friedman will rotate as lead vocalist and pianist in the orchestra.

The 24 featured Joel compositions including "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" and a medley of "River of Dreams," "Keeping the Faith" and "Only the Good Die Young."

Theater critics have hailed the production for its unconventional means of advancing a story through choreography.

"Movin' Out" opened Oct. 24, 2002, on Broadway and closed after more than 1,300 performances. Tharp won a Tony Award for choreography, as well as a Drama Desk award, while Joel earned a Tony for best orchestration.
