Big Island woman hopes to evacuate Lebanon tomorrow

By Brittany Yap

A 27-year-old Big Island resident and Kamehameha Schools teacher who has been stuck in Lebanon since the bombings started last week said she is packing her bags for a possible evacuation.

Sarah Ahmadia said in an interview with The Advertiser this morning that her family has received word an evacuation could happen tomorrow. She also said she hasn't heard anything through the U.S. Embassy, and that all of her information is coming from media reports provided by her family on the Big Island and other media outlets. She's already done one interview with CNN this morning and was scheduled to another one later today, though she didn't know what time it would air.

"They're telling the American media more than they're telling us," Ahmadia said. "Nothing is confirmed (about the evacuation)."

Ahmadia said she is nervous about the evacuation because she hasn't heard anything through the embassy. She had traveled to Lebanon on July 8 to visit family. Last week, Israel started bombing the area where she's been staying. She said bombs have gone off within 500 yards of where she's been staying.

"It's crazy," Ahmadia said. "I'm doing as well as can be expected."

Ahmadia has been keeping in contact with her family and friends through phone calls and text-messaging.

"I just want to go home," Ahmadia said. "I'm scared.

"I can't believe this is happening."
