Hundreds gather for Tantalus victim funeral

Advertiser Staff

More than 400 friends and family members paid respects to slain taxi driver Manh Nguyen this morning during a Buddhist ceremony at Borthwick Mortuary.

Gov. Linda Lingle also attended the services, which were delivered in Vietnamese. Lingle, who sat in the front row, did not speak and left through a side exit.

Nguyen's wife, Cynthia Lai; 17-year-old son, Victor; and 13-year-old daughter, Christina, knelt before Manh's picture and casket with heads bowed for more than an hour as a monk chanted.

Nguyen was among three people shot to death July 6 at a Tantalus lookout.
