Michigan man dies in snorkeling incident

Advertiser Staff

A 49-year-old Michigan man pulled from the water while snorkeling died at Castle Medical Center this morning, officials said.

The apparent drowning victim from Royal Oak, Mich. had traveled here with his wife, according to Jessica Rich, president and executive director of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii. The couple was visiting an adult son stationed on O'ahu with a branch of the military, Rich said. The couple was scheduled to return to the Mainland this evening, she said.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services said the man was on a snorkeling tour when the incident occurred on the left side of Makai pier, a beach across from the entrance to Sea Life Park in Makapu'u. City lifeguards in the Makapu'u area provided CPR until paramedics arrived and took over.
