The July 17, 1926, Honolulu Advertiser reported on criticism that Sheriff David Trask was not enforcing the Sunday closing laws.

1860: The cornerstone of Queen's Hospital is laid. The Pacific Commercial Advertiser published King Kamehameha IV's speech at the ceremony.

1884: The new currency act is approved to standardize currency in the Islands. U.S. gold and silver coins as well as Hawaiian silver coins are to be the legal tender within the Hawaiian Kingdom.

1915: Duke Kahanamoku breaks another world record in swimming in the 100-yard dash in a meet in Sutro Baths.

1937: The 86-day Maui sugar workers strike is settled.
