Overall winner Lightning sails in

Thomas Akin's Lightning finished Saturday afternoon to win the overall title based on handicap in the West Marine Pacific Cup yacht race from San Francisco to Kane'ohe, according to unofficial results released yesterday.

The official results will be released after all yachts are in on Wednesday.

Lightning, a Santa Cruz 52 representing the San Francisco Yacht Club, also won Division E. Lightning started July 6.

The Contessa won the double-handed division and was the first to reach Kane'ohe Bay on Saturday.

Other unofficial winners were California Girl (Division A), TutuBene (Division B), ET (Division C) and Synge (Division D).


BOXING

LOO WINS IN WALKOVER

Colleen Loo of Mililani was awarded the 101-pound championship in a walkover at the Women's National Golden Gloves Championships Saturday night in Hollywood, Fla.

In the 176-pound title match, Chatiqua Hemingway of Pittsburgh, Pa., defeated Chanelle Valdez of Waipi'o Gentry, when the referee stopped the contest in the second round.

PENOVAROFF WINS DEBUT

Van Oscar Penovaroff, of Kailua, Kona, won his professional debut with a unanimous decision over Beboy Cudeldiego at Alabang, Philippines, on Saturday.

All three judges scored the lightweight fight 40-34.

Cudeldiego is 0-2.


BEACH VOLLEYBALL

LAMBERT, METZGER THIRD

Punahou alums Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger lost to Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 21-14, 21-14, in the semifinals of the Association of Volleyball Professionals' Hoover (Ala.) Open yesterday.

Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers beat Gibb and Rosenthal for the men's title. Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh won the women's title.

Lambert and Metzger split $8,500 for third place.

KONA BEACH WINNERS

Eyal Zimet, Jason Salmeri, Chad Giesseman and Mike Thornton defeated Tony Ching, Alika Williams, Stevie Li and Wayne Kekina, 21-18, 19-21, 15-13 to win the sixth annual 4-man Summer Jam Beach Volleyball tournament Saturday at Coconut Grove Marketplace in Kailua, Kona, Hawai'i.
