Man struck by car on Kapi'olani still in critical condition

Advertiser Staff

A 24-year-old Honolulu man remains in critical condition this morning after being hit by a car at about 8:05 p.m. yesterday while trying to dart across Kapi'olani Boulevard near Hauoli Street in the McCully area.

Police vehicular homicide investigators said the pedestrian was attempting to cross the busy thoroughfare from south to north and was not in a crosswalk when he was struck a 1996 Toyota sedan headed west on Kapi'olani.

The 21-year-old Honolulu man driving the Toyota and his two passengers were not injured, police said.

The pedestrian suffered head and hip injuries and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition.

Police said that the Toyota driver was not speeding and had not been drinking, but that consumption of alcohol by the pedestrian may have been a factor in the incident.
