In reporting on the progress on building a new Pali road, The Advertiser commented that those who walk the Pali Road must pause every few hundred feet to comment on the stupidity of man. From the July 19, 1897, Pacific Commercial Advertiser.

1921: Riley Allen returns to Honolulu to become editor of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

1942: Kawaiaha'o Church observes its centennial at its Sunday service. The church was dedicated on July 21, 1842.

1949: War correspondent Ernie Pyle is buried at the National Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. More than 2,000 people attended the 25-minute ceremony.

1965: Syngman Rhee, former president of the Republic of South Korea, dies at Maunalani Hospital. He was 90.

1978: Hurricane Fico brushes past the Big Island and generates high surf that destroys a Puna home and demolishes a beach pavilion in Ka'u.
