Point Loma Nazarene's Cyr makes U.S. golf team

Point Loma Nazarene freshman golfer Sam Cyr is one of 12 collegiate players selected for the United States team in the inaugural USA China Friendship Cup Match.

Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate from Makawao, Maui, is the lone NAIA representative on the USA team, which consists of all freshmen. The event is set for July 27 to 29 at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.

Cyr finished second at the NAIA Region II Tournament and 11th at the NAIA National Tournament, earning All-Region and All-America honors.

FOOTBALL

  • Utah senior offensive lineman Tavo Tupola (Kahuku '99) was named to the Mountain West Conference Preseason All-Conference Football Team.

    SOFTBALL

  • Tennessee freshman middle infielder Liane Horiuchi (Kamehameha '05 from Wahiawa) was named to the Southeastern Conference Freshman honor roll.

    WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

  • Davidson (N.C.) freshman Emily King (Moanalua '05) was named the Southern Conference Freshman Runner of the Year.

    King won the 10K title at the Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May. Her time of 38:04.1 was a school record. The old record was 38:53.44, set in 1995.

    COMMITMENTS

  • Kalaheo graduate Chelsea Anglin will join the University of Colorado women's soccer team in the fall, according to a Colorado release.

  • Pearl City graduate Corrie Nishikida will play softball at Arizona Western College in Yuma, according to Doris Sullivan, director of the Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance.

    Sullivan said six football players have signed with Arizona Western: Farrington's Tanner Fetui, Jeremiah Tuua, and Kenneth Faumui; Kalaheo's Michael Andrews; Castle's Bryce Kalauokaaea; and Saint Louis' Kamalu Umu.

    Arizona junior colleges provide athletic scholarships in all sports as well as the Western Undergraduate Exchange program for Hawai'i students, according to Sullivan.
