Turtle Bay Resort, Local 5 settle 4-year labor dispute

Turtle Bay Resort management and the union representing its employees have tentatively agreed to a labor contract.

The tentative agreement was reached yesterday, according to a joint statement from UNITE HERE Local 5 and Benchmark Hospitality, which operates the property. Local 5 is scheduled to hold a meeting to ratify the contract Saturday.

About 340 unionized employees at the Turtle Bay Resort have been working without a contract since the last agreement expired November 2003.

"It has taken months of listening, discussion, and collaboration to make this a win-win for both the employees and the hotel," Benchmark and Local 5 said in the statement. "Both parties have negotiated in good faith and the process reinforced the value of mutual respect. We believe we are now in a much better place than ever before.

"I'm sure our employees are equally as happy about reaching this important milestone so we can continue to focus all our attention back to meeting the needs of our guests at the Turtle Bay Resort," said resort managing director Bob Boyle.

According to the statement, the agreement provides that the consumer boycott that had been launched by the union will be withdrawn.

"Our members are happy with the settlement, and we are pleased to welcome all our valued guests back to the resort," said Eric Gill, Local 5's secretary/treasurer.
