Commuters who have to pass by the King Street exit heading east on H-1 should plan for delays until at least 4:30 p.m. while a fuel spill is cleaned up and a retaining wall is repaired following a single-vehicle crash.Around 1 p.m., a KD Construction dump truck broke the retaining wall while swerving to avoid a car that cut it off while traveling east. The top portion of the wall broke off and concrete hit two cars traveling south, though nobody was injured.
The 39-year-old driver of the truck was taken to The Queen's Medical Center and later released. He was also arrested for disorderly conduct after running across lanes of oncoming traffic and endangering himself.
Police said 55 gallons of diesel fuel spilled when the truck overturned, which firefighters covered with absorbents.
"The driver is a good worker," said KD Construction safety officer Douglas Sarte, who is at the scene.
"The first thing we thought about when we heard about the accident was if anyone was hurt. The first thing they said was no."
Officials at the Department of Transportation said they will try to open two lanes for the east-bound traffic to travel through while the retaining wall is fixed.
Traffic is moving at a normal pace on the west-bound lanes.
Police are asking for witnesses who saw the crash and the car that allegedly swerved in front of the dump truck.
