1886: Electric lights were turned on for the first time in Honolulu. Five lamps were illuminated, one at 'Iolani Palace, one at the Government Building, one at the palace gate on Richards Street and two on King Street.
1944: Streetlights are turned back on in most of the rural districts of O'ahu. It is the first time since Dec. 7, 1941, that most of the rural communities have had streetlighting.
1975: Title IX goes into effect. U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink was the primary force behind the Women's Educational Equity Act, which required equal support for males and females in academics and athletics at any institution receiving federal money.
