Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i Baptist senior Jillian Kam won the Division I girls title at the Pepsi United States Bowling Congress Youth Championships on Wednesday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

In the final, Kam defeated Kristi Thurmond, of Sanford, Fla., 215-197, at Don Carter University Lanes.

Kam received a $2,000 scholarship for the victory.

"I'm just glad it's all over," she said in a press release. "It was one of my goals to win. This is like a dream."

This year's event featured 200 bowlers from all 50 states, U.S. military zones, Puerto Rico and Canada.

SURFING

KAUA'I'S POWERS OUSTED

Kaua'i's Roy Powers was eliminated in the third round of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in South Africa yesterday.

Only six heats of the third round were completed before the competition was postponed due to inconsistent conditions.

Australia's Mick Fanning defeated Powers, 15.66-13.67. Powers upset fellow Kaua'i surfer Andy Irons in the second round earlier this week.

Pancho Sullivan of O'ahu's North Shore is the only Hawai'i surfer remaining in the event. He will take on Brazil's Paulo Moura in the third round.
