1871: Roller skating comes to Hawai'i. Williams and Wallace open the Honolulu Skating Rink on Hotel Street.
1950: The 61 delegates to the Territory of Hawai'i's constitutional convention sign the basic document for a proposed state of Hawai'i. The delegates said it was a demonstration that Hawai'i was prepared to assume the responsibility of being a state.
1962: A Canadian Pacific turbo-prop plane crashes at Honolulu International Airport, killing 27 of the 40 people aboard. It was the first fatal crash of a scheduled commercial airliner in Hawai'i.
1981: Fred Toshio "Tosh" Kaneshiro, the Toots Shor of Hawai'i and a man who turned being a Los Angeles Dodgers fan into an art form, dies of cancer at age 59. He was proprietor of the family restaurant Columbia Inn for 40 years.
1995: A relic of Father Damien, the remains of his right hand, is re-interred next to Damien's church at Kalawao on the Kalaupapa peninsula.
1998: University of Hawai'i scientists announce they have successfully cloned more than 50 mice in three generations.
