Miller tops opponent in L.A. bout

Jason "Mayhem" Miller made a successful debut in the World Fighting Alliance yesterday.

Miller defeated California's Lodune Sincaid by choke submission in the first round.

The bout was part of the "King of the Streets" card at The Forum in Los Angeles, and was televised nationally on pay-per-view.

Miller (16-4), who is originally from Atlanta but now trains in Honolulu, was declared the winner when Sincaid (9-3) submitted 4:29 into the opening round.

Miller normally competes in the Hawai'i-based Icon Sport organization, but received clearance to compete in the WFA.

He will face Iowa's Robbie Lawler for the Icon Sport middleweight championship on Sept. 2 at the Blaisdell Center Arena.

Also on yesterday's card, California's Rob McCullough defeated Hawai'i's Harris Sarmiento by unanimous decision.


SURFING

SULLIVAN ELIMINATED

Pancho Sullivan of O'ahu's North Shore was eliminated in the fourth round of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay yesterday.

The final day of the four-day contest was completed in 3- to 4-foot waves at Jeffreys Bay, Australia.

Australian Taj Burrow had a near-perfect heat in defeating Sullivan, 18.34-10.83. Burrow's top two waves received scores of 9.57 (out of 10) and 8.77.

Australian Mick Fanning won the contest, defeating Burrow in the final.

Florida's Kelly Slater lost in the semifinals, but still increased his overall lead in the 2006 World Championship Tour rankings. Through six of 11 events, Slater is No. 1 with 5,109 points.

Burrow is No. 2 with 4,682. Kaua'i's Andy Irons dropped one spot to No. 3 with 4,365.

Among the other Hawai'i surfers, Bruce Irons is No. 12, Sullivan is No. 21, Fred Patacchia Jr. is No. 25, and Roy Powers is No. 41.


SWIMMING

SAKAMOTO, EASTON WIN

Noa Sakamoto won the men's open race and Sandie Easton captured the women's open title at the Cholo's Waimea Bay 2000 yesterday.

Sakamoto won in 24 minutes, 38 seconds, while Easton won in 28:49.6.
