A city engineer has estimated construction of sidewalks on Manoa streets would cost almost $56,000, the July 24, 1928, Advertiser reported.

1934: The USS Houston, with President Franklin D. Roosevelt aboard, anchors off of Kona.

1957: Harold K.L. Castle donates 10 acres of land as the site for a new Windward community hospital.

1966: Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and her two children leave Hawai'i after a seven-week vacation. She wrote a letter to the editors of The Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin thanking the papers for allowing her family to vacation in peace. "I had forgotten and my children have never known what it was like to discover a new place, unwatched and unnoticed," she wrote.

1974: Fujio Matsuda is named ninth president of the University of Hawai'i. He succeeded Harlan Cleveland, who left UH to join the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies.

1976: Francis Hyde I'i Brown, former legislator, philanthro
pist and sportsman known internationally as "Mr. Golf of Hawai'i," dies in Pebble Beach, Calif., at the age of 83.

1982: St. Anthony Church in Kailua burns in an early morning fire caused by an electrical short-circuit.

1998: Maui Pineapple Co., which had prided itself on being a "100 percent Hawaiian" product, announces the expense of business in the Islands is forcing it to extend operations to Indonesia and Central America to cut costs.

2002: Hilton Hawaiian Village shuts down its new Kalia Tower after mold is discovered in guest rooms.
