Several new schools were under construction in 1926, and the July 25 Advertiser reported that Central Grammar school was almost completed.

1862: Hawaiian Steam and General Inter-Island Navigation Co. is chartered.

1887: A meeting of about 300 Native Hawaiians is held at Kaumakapili Church to nominate candidates for the House of Nobles and House of Representatives. It was noted at the meeting that under the new Constitution, one must have an annual income of $600 to vote for a member of the House of Nobles. Wharf laborers at the time earned $2 a day. King Kalakaua had signed the "Bayonet Constitution" on July 6.

1929: Halema'uma'u erupts and is rapidly filling with lava.

1930: The public works committee of the Honolulu Board of Supervisors votes to proceed with the Kahuku section of Kamehameha Highway.

1957: Gov. Samuel King, 70, resigns after President Eisenhower decides not to reappoint him as territorial governor. Eisenhower said he wanted to put "young blood" into Republican Party leadership in Hawai'i.
