Tracking Daniel ends as storm weakens
Advertiser Staff
The former Hurricane Daniel has weakened so much that the National Weather Service will stop issuing updates on it after today's 11 a.m. report. The storm, which had been on track to hit Hawai'i with tropical storm winds, has collapsed within the past 36 hours.
"We're calling it a dissipated system," said Jim Weyman, director of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
The system still contains a lot of moisture, but Weyman said forecasters can not now predict when it will blow by the Hawaiian Islands. His best estimate is that it may pass the southern Big Island during the weekend, pushed by the trade winds, and bringing some rainfall with it.
As the former storm system approaches the Islands, the Weather Service will begin addressing its movement in its regular weather forecasts, Weyman said.
