Waipio wins state Little League title

MAKAWAO, Maui — Waipio rode the pitching and hitting of Marcus Yoshii today to 4-0 and 7-2 victories over MKH (Makakilo/Kapolei/Honokai Hale) to win the Hawai'i State Little League Majorss (ages 11-12) championship at Eddie Tam Field.

Yoshii, a lefthander who will be attending Punahou, pitched a no-hitter in the first game and also hit a two-run homer to force a playoff game for the championship in the double-elimination tournament.

He was dominating, striking out 16 to account for all but two outs in the six-inning game.

Tyler Tokunaga blasted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to close out the first-game scoring for Waipio.

In the second game, Waipio ralled for five runs in the top of the sixth inning to break at 2-2 tie.

Yoshii came up with the big hit, a bases-loaded one-out shot to right-center. The hit combined with a fielding error on the play brought in three runs.

Nicolas Ogasawara pitched the first four innings for Waipio and Tokunaga the last two to pick up the win.

Waipio advances to the Little League Western Regional Aug. 4 in San Bernardino, Calif. Hawai'i's representative last year, West O'ahu, went to to capture the world championship.
