Memea national wrestling champ

Hawai'i's Desiree Memea won her second consecutive wrestling title at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Women's National Championships yesterday at Fargo, N.D.

Memea, a 2006 University High graduate, defeated Dallas Monreal-berner of Illinois by decision to win the junior freestyle 175-pound weight class at the Fargodome.

Hawai'i's Keiko Akamine, of Iolani School, took second in the junior freestyle 95-pound weight class, losing to C C Weber of Michigan by fall, 5-0, 1:13, in the title match.


FISHING

MALIBU SEIZES LEAD AFTER BOATING 399-POUNDER

The Malibu Marlin Club tagged and released two marlin, and boated a 399-pounder to vault into the lead yesterday in the 47th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kailua, Kona.

The Malibu Marlin Club has 1,132 points, followed by Team Lantana with 800 and Pajaro Valley Game Fish Club with 400.

A total of 19 fish were caught, and five were boated, including the 399-pound Pacific blue marlin.

"The fight lasted about an hour and 45 minutes, although it felt more like a day and a half," said Malibu Marlin angler Burt Kuska, of Big Fork, Mont., who is competing in his first HIBT.

The Malibu Marlin Club was fishing aboard Bite Me 3 with captain Mike Sells, who leads the captain standings with 1,132 points.

Fishing continues through Friday.


VOLLEYBALL

THREE FROM HAWAI'I MAKE U.S. YOUTH TEAM

Hawai'i's Kanani Herring, Sydney Yogi and Jordan Meredith made the final cut for the 12-member United States volleyball team in the NORCECA Girls' Youth (U-18) Continental Championship, which runs through Sunday in Gainesville, Fla.

Herring is one of two team captains, and will play outside hitter. She was The Advertiser's State Player of the Year as a sophomore last season when she led Kamehameha to the state championship.

Yogi, of Punahou School, will play libero, and Meredith, of Kamehameha, is an outside hitter.

The tournament winner qualifies for the 2007 FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship (U-18).

United States, Canada, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico and Puerto Rico are entered in this year's tournament at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center on the campus of University of Florida.

The six teams will play a round-robin format with classification matches held Sunday to determine final tournament rankings.


SOCCER

STATEWIDE TRYOUTS FOR YOUTHS COMING UP

The Hawai'i Youth Soccer Association Olympic Development Program, designed to find top youth soccer talent locally, is holding tryouts beginning next month.

HYSA's ODP is a part of the United States Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, a national program to locate and train the best players in the U.S. for Olympic and national teams.

The fee for any of the five island district tryouts is $100. Select players will be invited to the Hawai'i State tryout, which costs $135. Players must be selected from the state tryout to attend the Region IV Camp. From there, players can be selected to region or national teams or pools.

O'ahu—Sept. 3 and 4 at the Waipi'o Soccer Complex, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for boys and girls born in 1993, 1994 and 1995. From 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. for boys and girls born in 1990, 1991 and 1992.


BASKETBALL

CAMPING FOR BOYS AND GIRLS IN AUGUST

Applications are being accepted for the Sole Fundamentals Basketball Camp for boys and girls in grades 5 through 12.

The five-day camp will be held Aug. 7 to 11 at Manoa Valley District Park Gym. It features instruction from local high school coaches and former collegiate players and coaches.

Cost is $100. Each participant receives a ball and t-shirt. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to ASSETS School athletic department.
