The National Earthquake Information Center about two hours after the event established a 4.5 magnitude for an earthquake that occurred deep in the ocean south of Kaho'olawe at 10:03 a.m. today.

The quake did not generate a tsunami.

Early estimates of the temblor's strength ranged from 3.8 to 5.

The center said the quake occurred about 5 miles deep in the Earth's crust.

Residents across the state felt the earth move.

"The boards started creaking in the house. I've never heard that before in 20 years of living here," said Lanikai resident Alan Lloyd.

There were also reports of residents feeling the shaking from the Big Island to Kaua'i.
