'Solid' 66 puts Wie in first-place tie

Associated Press

EVIAN, France — Michelle Wie shot a 6-under-par 66 Thursday to share the lead after the second round of the Evian Masters.

The 16-year-old Punahou School senior was at 9-under 135 after two rounds on the hilly lakeside course, where temperatures reached 94 degrees in the Alpine foothills.

"I thought I played very solid today," Wie said. "I made some good pars and I feel a lot better than yesterday. I still feel like I left a lot of shots out there, but overall my game feels good. Hopefully, I will be able to maintain it."

Wie needed an eagle on the par-5 18th Wednesday to salvage her round at 69.

Wie, still seeking her first tournament win as a professional, is now tied with Lorena Ochoa and Karrie Webb.

Ochoa, the top money winner this season in women's golf, shot a 69 to follow her opening 66. Webb had a 68 to go with her opening 67.

Se Ri Pak was a stroke off the lead after her second 68. Fellow South Korean Mi Hyun Kim was two off the lead after slipping to 71.

Defending champion Paula Creamer shot a 68 to close to three behind. Annika Sorenstam, the world's top-ranked player, shot her second straight 69 and was also three off the pace.

Wie, who finished second with Ochoa when Creamer won here a year ago, did not drop a single shot in picking up six birdies.

She squandered a chance to go even lower, missing an easy putt to settle for a par-4 on the 13th hole.

Wie's final tee shot of the day hit a tree, but she got lucky when the ball bounced back into the fairway. However, she was less fortunate on the birdie putt, which she missed by a couple of feet.

"Starting with the 12 th hole I had so many birdie chances," Wie said. "I hit good putts and rolled it good but it just kind of went by the hole. I could have made a couple more putts, but I am still happy with the way I played today."
