New Guinea anglers lead way

The New Britain Game Fishing Club of Papua, New Guinea caught four Pacific blue marlin, including a 594-pounder, yesterday to seize the lead at the 47th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament in waters off Kailua, Kona.
The New Britain team, fishing aboard Humdinger with captain Jeff Fay, amassed 1,562 points to overtake Malibu Marlin Club (1,332). Predator Fishing Club is third with 900 points.
"Our team fished HIBT back in 1993. It's great to be back and even better to have caught such an awesome Pacific blue marlin," said New Britain's Philip Chan, who landed the 594-pounder. "The fight was hard work, I almost gave up. But I have a great team who encouraged me."
New Britain captain John Lau boated a 351-pound marlin while two others were tagged and released on a day when 23 fish were caught.
Fishing continues through tomorrow.

MORGAN RESIGNS AT HILO
University of Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball coach Julie Morgan has resigned, UHH athletic director Kathleen McNally announced yesterday in a press release.
The school did not give a reason for Morgan's resignation.
Morgan, who guided the Vulcans to a 14-11 record last season, finished her three years at UHH with a 26-48 record.
Herring sparks U.S.
Kamehameha Schools junior Kanani Herring amassed a match-high 17 points as Team USA beat Mexico, 25-13, 25-14, 25-18, last night in the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Volleyball Championship at Gainesville, Fla.
Herring, who had nine points in Team USA's opening sweep against Honduras, had 10 kills, five aces and two blocks against Mexico.
Libero Sydney Yogi, a Punahou School junior, handled a match-high 18 digs for the U.S., which plays Puerto Rico today.

GARCIA ADVANCES
Hawai'i's Sunny Garcia rallied with the best ride of the day, scoring a 9.00 yesterday to finish second in his heat and advance to the round of 48 in the $125,000 Honda U.S. Open of Surfing at Huntington Beach, Calif.
In the $30,000 Honda Women's U.S. Open of Surfing, Hawai'i's Melanie Bartels, Megan Abudo, Rochelle Ballard and Anastasia Ashley advanced to tomorrow's round of 24.
FOOTBALL
WITHY-ALLEN IN FINAL
Quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen and the Fayetteville Guard (Ark.) will play in the National Indoor Football League championship game tomorrow against the host Billings (Mont.) Outlaws.
Withy-Allen, a Kalaheo High and University of Hawai'i alum, was named Offensive Player of the Week in Weeks 15 and 16.
He also played for the Hawaiian Islanders of arenafootball2 during the 2004 season.
Fayetteville and Billings both finished 13-1 in the regular season and won two playoff games.
The NIFL started in 2000, and currently has 22 teams.
