Glamour, Elle turn to 50th state for summer beauty tips

By Paula Rath

When the beauty editors of Glamour and Elle magazines sought experts on summer beauty for their July issues, whom did they call? Honolulu hair stylist Taryn Lee and the hip, hot Honolulu-based designers of Fighting Eel, Rona Bennett and Lan Chung.

Stephanie Huszar of Glamour was looking for tips on how to handle hair issues in the heat of summer, so she called Lee of Aveda Lifestyle Salon & Spa in Ala Moana Center. Lee offered six tips on how to fight frizz and flatness on humid summer days. The tips are helpful whether you're in Honolulu or the Hamptons.

Here's one of Lee's tips: "Do the twist. Scrunching curly hair post-shower only creates frizz. Instead, grab inch-wide strips of damp hair at the ends, twirl up to your roots, then let go."

In a charticle titled "Counter Culture: Surf and Turf," Elle beauty editors chose six fashion designers to grill about their "sunny-day necessities," from sunscreens and accessories to pedicures and favorite hangouts.

Bennett, an avid surfer, said she protects her skin from the sun with Neutrogena Healthy Defense Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 45. Chung chooses Coppertone Sport SPF 30.

Bennett's hangout: Diamond Head; Chung's: Kaimana.

At the end of the (beach) day, Bennett slathers on Korres Guava Body Butter, and Chung said she nourishes her sun-tanned skin with Oils of Aloha Kukui Oil.
