Local gymnasts win junior Olympic titles

 •  Polo player bounces back from spill to excel on field

Four local gymnasts captured titles at the USA-Gymnastics Junior Olympics Trampoline-Tumbling National Championships, held in Schaumburg, Ill., July 10 to 15.

The winners were:

  • Dorothy Sanidad, age 6 of Kaimuki, who won the title in the trampoline and double mini trampoline for level 6 girls. She also finished third in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Spencer Madanay, 13 of Kahala, who won the trampoline crown in the level 10, boys age 13 to 14 group. He also placed 10th in the level 10 double mini trampoline, fourth in level 8 power tumbling and third in level 10 synchronized trampoline.

  • Kelsen Onigama, 11 of Kalihi, who captured the double mini trampoline in the level 10, boys 11 to 12 age group. He also was second in level 10 individual trampoline, seventh in level 9 power tumbling and third in level 10 synchronized trampoline.

  • Annika Northrop, 9 of Kailua, who took first in power tumbling in level 6, girls 9 to 19 age group. She also finished seventh in level 9 individual trampoline and eighth in level 8 double mini trampoline.

    Other Hawai'i athletes (listed by name, age, hometown and events) also competed. The results were:

  • Kira Vercruyssen, 19, Manoa, fourth in level 10 individual trampoline, fifth in level 10 double mini trampoline.

  • Michelle Radovan, 16, 'Ewa Beach, 12th in level 10 individual trampoline, seventh in level 10 double mini trampoline.

  • Mia Vercruyssen, 16, Manoa, fifth in level 6 individual trampoline, fourth in level 6 double mini trampoline, eighth in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Alena Eaton, 14, Makiki, 10 in level 6 individual trampoline, 23rd in level 6 double mini trampoline.

  • Kathryn Chinn, 13, Manoa, 26th in level 10 individual trampoline, 19th in level 10 double mini trampoline and ninth in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Kristie Kawazoe, 13, Pearl City, 25th in level 10 individual trampoline, 20th in level 10 double mini trampoline and 36th in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Linnet Eaton, 12, Makiki, 30th in level 9 individual trampoline, 22nd in level 8 double mini trampoline, 27th in level 5 power tumbling.

  • Amy Johnson, 12, Kane'ohe, 35th in level 6 individual trampoline, sixth in level 6 double mini trampoline.

  • Christina Laguens, 12, Makiki, 24th in level 8 individual trampoline, 16th in level 7 double mini trampoline, 20th in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Joy Ogasawara, 12, Kahala, 35th in level 8 individual trampoline, 29th in level 7 double mini trampoline, fifth in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Julia Ruggieri, 12, Kahala, fifth in level 8 individual trampoline, 11th in level 7 double mini trampoline.

  • Leia Shinsato, 12, Moanalua, 17th in level 8 individual trampoline, 17th in level 7 double mini trampoline, 29th in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Darcey Curtin, 11, Moanalua, 10th in level 7 individual trampoline, 11th in level 7 double mini trampoline, 35th in level 5 power tumbling.

  • Joanna Eaton, 11, Makiki, 34th in level 9 individual trampoline, 17th in level 9 double mini trampoline, 30th in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Joshua Smith, 11, 'Ewa Beach, ninth in level 10 individual trampoline, sixth in level 10 double mini trampoline, 10th in level 8 power tumbling.

  • Witney Toyoda, 10, Kaimuki, fourth in level 8 individual trampoline, 18th in level 7 double mini trampoline, 25th in level 6 power tumbling.

  • Ally Vercruyssen, 9, Kaimuki, 19th in level 5 individual trampoline, 19th in level 5 double mini trampoline.

  • Kylie Northrop, 7, Kailua, 21st in level 5 individual trampoline, 38th in level 5 double mini trampoline, 28th in level 5 power tumbling.

    Head coach: Kira Vercruyssen. Assistant coaches: Dr. Elizabeth Barrett, Rod Onigama, Abby Eaton and Dr. Donna Mah (team physician).

    KARATE

    SOMERA TAKES THREE GOLD MEDALS AT AAU

    Sherelyn Somera, a student at American Karate Kai and Kick Start Karate, captured three gold medals at the AAU Karate Championships last month in Miami.

    Somera, competing in the brown belt division, was first in weapons, kata and kumite.

    Blaine Mendoza took silver in the black belt kata and bronze in kumite.

    Michael Castillo, Blessie Pillos and Christine Pillos, all competing in the brown belt division, won gold in kata and kumite events. Other gold medalists were Aaron Mendoza (kumite) and Brittany Hunter (kata).

    Other team members participating were: Mayrie Aquino, Castillo, Gendell Espero, Geoffrey Espero, Kalena Maioho, Matthew Pasaylo, Marie Fe Pascual, Blessie Pillos, Christine Pillos, Pafuti Sataua and Cody Yanagida. Also assisting the team were sensei Wally Salazar, coach Julie Santos and chaperone Merl Paraoan-Bautista.

    SIX QUALIFY FOR JUNIOR PAN-AMERICAN EVENT

    Six athletes from the Japan International Karate Center earned positions on the Junior USA National Team, based on their performances at the USA National Karate Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last week.

    Bradley Nishibata, 17, Kawika Robertson, 16, Brooke Yorita, 16, Chad Watson, 15, Rance China, 14, and Patrick Martin, 13 will travel to Curacao in September to compete in the Junior Pan-American Championships for the USA.

    There were 41 JIKC athletes who participated in Florida, and they earned 37 gold medals, 31 silver and 32 bronze.

    BASEBALL

    STINGRAYS FINISH THIRD AT DISNEY TOURNAMENT

    The Hawai'i Stingrays finished third in the 10-under Disney's Salute to Baseball Festival at Orlando, Fla., in July

    The Stingrays beat Saudi Arabia Desert Scorpions, 6-4, in the third-place game.

    The Stingrays went 4-3 in the six-team tournament.
