U.S. youth volleyball unbeaten

In a battle of undefeated teams in the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Volleyball Championship, the U.S. had the last momentum swing in its favor to defeat Dominican Republic, 25-10, 19-25, 25-20, 25-27, 15-9, last night on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville.

The teams, which had both qualified for the final, will meet tonight for the tournament title.

Tarah Murrey sparked Team USA with 20 points on 14 kills, four blocks and two aces. Kamehameha Schools junior Kanani Herring added seven points and Punahou School junior Sydney Yogi contributed 13 digs.

"This is a great learning experience for us because we have not been pushed like this so far in the tournament," Herring said. "We will come out with more fire tomorrow and be ready to win the gold medal."


SURFING

BARTELS TIES FOR THIRD

Wai'anae's Melanie Bartels tied for third in the Women's Honda U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Bartels was ousted in the semifinals by former world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru.

Mulanovich went on to win the contest, beating Australia's Jessi Miley-Dyer in the final.

Kaua'i's Rochelle Ballard was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In the Men's Honda U.S. Open of Surfing, Hawai'i surfers Mason Ho and Roy Powers advanced to the sixth round.

Fellow Hawai'i surfers Joel Centeio and Kekoa Bacalso were eliminated in the fifth round.


YOUTH BASEBALL

HILO TAKES TWO

Hilo won two games yesterday to remain in contention in the Cal Ripken (12-under) West Zone Regional at Woodland, Calif.

Hilo eliminated Scottsdale (Ariz.), 6-0, then ousted host Woodland, 10-0.

Hilo (3-1) plays Bakersfield (Calif.) North West (2-1) in an elimination game today.

MILILANI OUSTED

West Hills (Calif.) eliminated Mililani, 11-7, yesterday at the P.O.N.Y. Bronco (ages 11-12) West Zone Regional in Whittier, Calif.

Micah Kitaoka had two hits and two RBIs for Mililani.

DIVING



MONDEN PLACES 10TH

Aleia Monden, a 2006 St. Andrew's Priory graduate from Mililani, finished 10th in the 1-meter event yesterday at the USA Diving Junior National Championships in Indiana.

She will compete in the 10-meter platform event today.


BASKETBALL

ELECTRIC VICTORY

Samantha Saito and Amy Kotani each scored seven points as Commercial Electric beat Lanakila, 46-34, last night to win the D.One Women's Summer Basketball league championship.
