One year in jail for copper thief

By KEN KOBAYASHI

A 35-year-old man was placed on five years probation this morning and ordered to serve a year in jail for stealing more than $235,000 in copper wiring from his electrical company. He then sold the copper to recyclers as scrap metal and received about $91,000 in cash, prosecutors said.

Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall also ordered Shane Boyle to pay $235,965 in restitution.

Boyle, former warehouse manager for Graybar Electric Co., was found guilty of first-degree theft after he decided not to challenge the felony and pleaded no contest earlier this year.

Crandall rejected both the defense request to give Boyle a chance to have the charge dismissed by staying out of the trouble and also a prosecution request for a maximum 10-year term.

City prosecutors said Boyle stole at least 105,000 pounds of copper in 2004 and 2005. The scheme involved drivers taking spools of the wire from Graybar's warehouse for recycling on more than 100 occasions during an 18-month period.

Boyle was taken into custody immediately to start serving his one-year term.
