WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — A 17-year-old South Kohala boy who died over the weekend after his car crashed on Route 190 has been identified by police as Caleb Mahi of Waikoloa.

Investigators are not certain when the wreck occurred, saying it could have happened hours before someone spotted Mahi's car at about 10:20 a.m. Saturday. Mahi was northbound when his vehicle crossed the centerline, ran off the left side of the road and overturned approximately 150 feet south of the 17-mile marker. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:16 p.m.

Police said it appears Mahi was not wearing his seat belt.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities on the Big Island this year, compared with 19 a year ago.
