Visitor arrivals up 2.9% in June; Japanese down 13.4%

Hawai'i's visitor industry continued to grow last month despite a double-digit decline in Japanese tourists.

Overall visitor arrivals totaled 670,257, up 2.9 percent compared to June last year, according to the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

Total visitor expenditures grew 8.7 percent to set a June record of nearly $1.1 billion.

The continued tourism boom is largely because of record domestic visitor arrivals. At the same time, Japanese visitor arrivals — which have fallen every month this year — declined 13.4 percent.
