1899: Hawaiian Tramways Co. begins laying double tracks on every street controlled by its franchise. Both tracks were to be used by horse cars until proposed electric service began.
1903: The Alexander Young Hotel formally opens to the public. Some 2,000 people attended the gala opening night reception.
1917: More than 25,000 men registered for military service on Registration Day. The Advertiser reported that 7,940 were citizens and 18,030 were resident aliens. The United States had entered World War I on April 6, 1917.
