UH PROFESSOR NAMED FELLOW

Yuri Wellington, assistant professor of Multicultural Education and English Language Arts at the UH College of Education, has been selected as a Fellow of the 2006 American Issues Forum.

The American Issues Forum is an initiative of Leadership America, a nonprofit leadership organization that recognizes and develops leadership skills in women worldwide.

CAMPBELL GRAD GETS MDA AWARD

Ryan Funayama, 31, of Kapolei, has been named the 2006 Personal Achievement Award recipient of the Muscular Dystrophy Association's Hawai'i Chapter.

He was diagnosed with Becker Muscular Dystrophy at age 3.

A Campbell High School and Leeward Community College graduate, he is employed as staff accountant for Hawaii Agricultural Research Center.

GOOD BEGINNINGS BESTOWS KUDOS

Good Beginnings Alliance has announced the 2006 Outstanding Early Childhood Professionals of the Year. They are:

  • Steve Bobilin of Leeward Community College's Children Center, Pearl City.

  • Michelle Lemi of Kaua'i Head Start, Lihu'e, Kaua'i.

  • Sylvia Loo of KCAA Preschools of Hawaii Kuapa, Honolulu.

  • Judy Mailheau of KCAA Preschools of Hawaii Atherton, Kailua.

  • Susie Shim of Kuli'ou'ou Child Care, Honolulu.

    ROTARY FINISHES SERVICE PROJECT

    The Rotary Club of Waikiki recently performed a service project at Kuhio Elementary School, which involved painting the cafeteria, curbs and the U.S. map on the playground.

    The project was the service portion of the Weinberg Friends program; the Weinberg Foundation donated $10,000 to the Waikiki Health Center's Youth Outreach Project.
