Hawai'i girls help U.S. win volleyball title

The United States Girls' Youth National Team beat the Dominican Republic for the second consecutive day to win the championship of the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Volleyball Championship yesterday at Gainsville, Fla.
The U.S. girls team beat the Dominican Republic, 25-13, 24-22, 25-13, in the title game.
Kamehameha junior Kanani Herring of 'Ewa Beach contributed six points on four kills and two blocks. Punahou junior Sydney Yogi of Honolulu had 11 digs. Jordan Meredith, a Kamehameha junior, also is on the squad.
Tarah Murrey of El Cerrito, Calif., was named the tournament's most valuable player. Herring was named best receiver and Yogi was best libero.
The United States and Dominican Republic earned spots in the FIVB Girls Youth World Championship in Mexicali and Tijuana next year.
BASEBALL
KALANI WINS STATE TITLE
Marc Factora went 3 for 3, including a double and five RBIs, to help Kalani defeat Castle, 14-2, yesterday for the American Legion (19-under) State Tournament championship yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.
Kalani advances to the West Zone Regional, Aug. 10 to 14, at Albuquerque, N.M.
Cameron Bayne, Andrew Uyehara and Colby Ho also had three hits for Kalani.
Micah Takahashi pitched six innings to earn the victory.
Factora, an Iolani alum, was named most valuable player of the tournament.
HILO BLANKS BAKERSFIELD
Hilo eliminated Bakersfield (Calif.) North West, 3-0, yesterday in the Cal Ripken (12-under) West Zone Regional at Woodland, Calif.
Hilo (4-1) faces Oakland American (3-0) today in the double-elimination tournament.
SURFING
POWERS FINISHES SECOND
Roy Powers of Kaua'i placed second in the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Rob Machado of California defeated Powers in the one-on-one final, 13.83-11.20. Powers needed a wave score of 6.33 to take the lead in the final five minutes of the heat, but managed just a 3.17 and 1.0.
Machado received $15,000 for the victory, and Powers received $7,500. Mason Ho of O'ahu's North Shore tied for ninth place and received $1,500.
In the Lost Pro Junior for surfers age 20 and younger, Torrey Meister of O'ahu's North Shore placed second to Australian Ben Dunn.
Meister and Dunn each finished with a two-wave score of 16.0, but Dunn was awarded the victory on a tie-breaking wave (9.0-8.5).
BASKETBALL
ENGLISH VS. SENSLEY
Former University of Hawai'i basketball standouts Carl English and Julian Sensley played against each other in two exhibition games over the weekend at Hamburg, Germany.
English is playing with Canada's national team, and Sensley is with Germany's national team.
English led Canada with 40 points in the two games. He scored 18 in Canada's 71-68 victory on Saturday, and then had 22 in a 95-75 loss to Germany yesterday.
Sensley scored 18 points in the two games, including 13 in Germany's victory yesterday.
Germany is preparing for the FIBA World Championship at Japan, Aug. 19-Sept. 3. Canada did not qualify for the World Championship.
TENNIS
KAILUA TOP SEEDS WIN
Top-seeds Michael Bruggemann and Erich Chen defeated Craig Nunokawa and Gregg Takata, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 16 of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles last night.
In other matches, No. 5 Mikael Maatta and Jan Tribler defeated Daniel Llarenas and Sinapeo Roberts, 6-2, 6-1; Hyatt Bailey and Blake Mosley upset No. 7 Tim Didonato and Nicholas Moxley, 7-5, 6-1 and Torin Ching and Jeff Giesea upset No. 8 Martie Ishida and Hiram Oyama, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
RUNNING
GOLTZ TOPS IN VOLCANO
Dan Goltz of Volcano, Hawai'i, won the marathon division of the Volcano Art Center's 24th annual Kilauea Volcano Runs Saturday.
A total of 898 runners and walkers completed one of four events. The race starts and finishes at Kilauea Military Camp in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, at an elevation of 4,000 feet.
Goltz, competing in the 30-39 age division, finished in 3 hours, 25 minutes, 59 seconds. Lyman Perry, also of Volcano, was second in 3:26:59.
The top female marathon winner, Lahaina's Sara Clark (40-49), finished 12th overall in 4:03:48. Deborah Wedge, from Clermont, Fla., was second in 4:16:06.
The Volcano Marathon course covers rough and uneven terrain, the stark lava fields of the Ka'u Desert and 1,000-foot elevation changes.
TRIATHLON
MARR 6TH IN SONOMA
Mililani's Tim Marr finished sixth at the Vineman Triathlon 70.3 in Sonoma, Calif., yesterday.
Marr, who won last week's Tinman Triathlon, finished the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run yesterday in 4 hours, 4 minutes.
Simon Lessing won in 3:57:02.
