The cornerstone for the new Central Union Church was laid on June 3, 1891.

1905: Gas is turned into the street mains of the Honolulu Gas Co. for the first time and the company's office uptown was illuminated, along with one or two places on Nu'uanu.

It showed that as a light-maker, gas is a great success, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported.

1942: Because of fears of another air attack, the military governor orders women and children living in the evacuation area between Punchbowl and Liliha to move to safer areas.

1950: Three separate flows from the Mauna Loa eruption that began June 1 have now reached the ocean.

1963: Pope John XXIII dies at the age of 81 and in the fifth year of his pontificate.

1977: Maui Mayor Elmer Cravalho's life is threatened as the marijuana eradication program "Operation Destroy" continues.
