Depleted UH ousted in NCAA baseball

Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawaii baseball team finally ran out of pitching and rallies and was eliminated Sunday from the NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament.

After rallying from a 5-0 deficit to oust Kansas, 9-5, earlier in the day, the Rainbows fell behind early and couldn't catch up to host and top seed Oregon State in losing, 12-3, in the double-elimination tournament at Corvallis, Ore.

Playing without its top pitcher Steven Wright and its starting shortstop Eli Christensen for the past three games, UH managed to eliminate two teams before falling to the Beavers.

UH ousted Wright State, 5-3, Saturday and then rallied to beat Kansas Sunday in a game in which UH needed to use its closer Darrell Fisherbaugh to pitch 5 1/3 innings of long relief for the victory.

The victory over Kansas enabled the Rainbows to play tournament unbeaten Oregon State with UH needing a victory both Sunday and Monday to advance to a Super Regional.

But with UH already having used starters Justin Costi, Ian Harrington and Mark Rodrigues, the Rainbows started reliever Matt Daly, who lasted just 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs.

Tyler Davis followed, pitched 3 2/3 innings and also allowed four runs.

Despite an early 4-0 deficit, UH mounted a few rallies. It chopped the deficit to 4-2, only to see the OSU lead go to 5-2.

UH answered with a run in the sixth to make it 5-3 and had the bases loaded but failed to add another run.

Oregon State pulled away with three runs in the seventh and four unearned runs in the eighth.

Esteban Lopez had two hits and two runs batted in for the Rainbows, who finished the season 45-17. Matt Inouye, Kris Sanchez and Derek DuPree also added two hits for UH.
