Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawaii baseball team, down 5-0 early, rallied behind a pair of two-run homers by Matt Inouye and gutty long relief by closer Darrell Fisherbaugh to defeat Kansas, 9-5, Sunday and stay in contention in the NCAA Regional Tournament in Corvallis, Ore.

Hawaii (45-16) will advance to play Oregon State at 3 p.m. Hawaii time later Sunday.. Kansas (43-25) was eliminated from the double-elimination regional. Oregon State, the host and top seed, has not lost in the tournament. The Beavers can advance to the Super Regional by winning today. If they lose, the championship will be played Monday.

Inouye's first two-run homer in the third tied the game at 5. His next two-run shot in the fifth gave UH its first lead at 7-5.

Meanwhile, Fisherbaugh, the team's closer with nine saves, pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief for the victory. He did not allow a run and gave up five hits.

Kansas jumped to a 5-0 lead on left-handed UH starter Mark Rodrigues with four runs in the first and a run in the third. But Hawaii rallied for five runs in the bottom of the third, two runs in the fifth, a single run in the sixth and another in the ninth.

Hawaii's five-run third inning was capped by Inouye's two-run homer, his first of the season. Inouye's last homer came on May 21 of last year.

In the bottom of the fifth, Luis Avila opened with a single and Inouye followed with another two-run shot to left. Inouye went 52 previous starts this season without a homer.

In the sixth, Avila's single scored Derek DuPree for an 8-5 lead. In the ninth, Nathan Young, who batted 3-for-4, singled and later scored on a passed ball for a 9-5 lead.

The Rainbows erased the 5-0 deficit in the third.

Young singled and Robbie Wilder walked. DuPree, trying to sacrifice, bunted the ball over the pitcher's mound for a single to load the bases. Justin Frash grounded out to first, scoring Young and moving up Wilder and DuPree a base to third and second, respectively.

Avila followed with a single to left to score both runners and make the game 5-3.

Inouye then hit a two-run shot to left-center to tie the score at 5.

The game started poorly for UH.

The first four Kansas batters reached base against Rodrigues. Matt Baty walked on four pitches, and Ritchie Price followed with a ground single to left. Jared Schweitzer singled to center to score Baty and Gus Milner doubled to score Price and move Schweitzer to third. A balk scored Schweitzer and sent Miler to third. Milner scored on a groundout.

In the third, Schweitzer, who hit for the cycle against Hawaii Friday, homered for a 5-0 lead.

After giving up successive two-out hits in the fourth, Rodrigues was replaced by Fisherbaugh.

UH also chased Kansas' righthander Ricky Fairchild in the fourth, opening with successive singles to Esteban Lopez and Young. After Wilder sacrificed the runners to second and third, reliever Brendan McNamara got DuPree to pop out and Frash to fly out to deep center.

INJURY UPDATE

Shortstop Eli Christensen remained out for a second game after suffering an injured elbow during pregame of Friday's loss to Kansas. He was replaced Saturday by freshman Nathan Young, who also started for Christensen again Sunday. Young batted 3-for-4 Sunday against Kansas.
